Black Panther Movie Ticket Pre-Sales Outpace Civil War

Marvel fans are excited about the studio’s Black Panther movie. The film, which hits theaters next month, had the biggest first-day ticket presale of any Marvel movie and set a record for the best first-day advance ticket sales for any Marvel movie.

Black Panther is the first standalone film to focus on the titular character, the superhero alias of King T’Challa of the fictional country Wakanda, portrayed by actor Chadwick Boseman.

Black Panther is already breaking records as early ticket sales are outpacing Captain America: Civil War. Marvel Studios will kick off their 2018 slate by giving one of Civil War‘s breakout characters their own movie. Black Panther will put Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa in the leading role, marking the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to be led by a person of color. Ryan Coogler (Creed) is also leading the charge as director. As if all of this wasn’t good enough, the supporting cast assembled may be Marvel’s best cast to date.

Interest in Black Panther has been high ever since it was announced but has only grown in the years that followed. The buzz really picked up upon the initial trailer launch, and the subsequent trailers have yet to do anything to diminish the excitement. All of this culminated with the final trailer launching earlier this week and tickets going sale. It is still early, but Black Panther is already poised to impress.

Erik Davis from Fandango revealed that Black Panther sold more advanced tickets in its first 24 hours than any other MCU movie, and is outpacing Captain America: Civil War in the process. As the release draws nearer, there will be a clearer picture of what this means for Black Panther‘s box office potential. But, this should be a sign it will blow past the initial $90 million opening weekend estimates.

Black Panther besting Civil War is no small feat, even if this record comes from just the first 24 hours and only on Fandango. Civil War went on to break Fandango’s record for advanced ticket sales by any superhero movie, so if Black Panther can keep up the pace, it may do so just two years later.

These types of tickets typically represent the interest from die-hard fans, so there is still time for general audiences to help push Black Panther even higher. Civil War opened to $179M in its opening weekend, so Black Panther coming anywhere close to that figure (or even topping it) may not be crazy to think anymore.

Not only could Black Panther become one of the MCU’s biggest launches, but depending on just how big it opens, it could be February’s biggest hit ever. That record currently belongs to Deadpool‘s $132M opening, but Black Panther may just have what it takes to beat it. There is plenty of interest in Marvel Studios’ first black superhero movie as evident by the advanced ticket sales and for good reason.

It is coming out in Black History Month and has garnered comparisons to Wonder Woman for how culturally significant it could wind up being. That said, a big box office debut is likely dependent on Black Panther getting great reviews.

With it due to hit theaters in just over a month, it shouldn’t be too much longer before early reactions and reviews hit. Even if the reviews aren’t glowing, Black Panther still looks to be solidifying a big opening weekend launch.
