Hosted by comedian Mike Epps, this star-studded event is the talk of the industry as the ABFF Awards ceremony celebrates black culture and recognizes individuals, movies, and television shows of the past year that have had a significant impact on American entertainment, as well as the people who have been proponents in championing diversity and inclusion in Hollywood. The perfect counter to #OscarsSoWhite, ABFF and BET step in to lift up the tremendous and recognizable accomplishments blacks have made in the entertainment industry at large. The ceremony not only honored those who are making strides in film and television today, but also those who blazed trails. Ray Charles' daughter leading national drug awareness campaign

http://www.fox7austin.com/news/local-news/76537448-story The daughter of legendary musician Ray Charles has been in the Austin area this week on a mission to help those battling drug addiction. Sheila Raye Charles is leading the Raye of Hope Recovery Crusade across Texas and 15 other states raising awareness and  education   about drug abuse. Charles visited the Travis County Jail earlier this week and a number of other stops across Travis County not only share her story but to also let those people know there is hope and is using her story as proof. While most public discussion relating illegal drugs focuses on  marijuana reform , one source is arguing for a shift in conversation. While marijuana reform is an multifaceted issue, there still needs to be a focus on  on what we are doing to combat drug addiction in the country as a whole. In a  recent report , it was argued that the U.S. needs to follow the same concepts utilized in Canada to combat drug addiction

Laurence Fishburne Tackles Bogart at ‘The Maltese Falcon’ Live Read       Fishburne's Live Read cast included Orlando Jones, Cree Summer, Spencer Garrett, Liza Lapira and his son, Langston Fishburne. The 1941 noir film  The Maltese Falcon  got a modern update on Thursday night thanks to Film Independent's Live Read series created by filmmaker Jason Reitman. Starring Humphrey Bogart as a private detective in the search of falcon statue, The Maltese Falcon, it was hailed as the first true noir film and one of Bogart’s top performances. Although Reitman was not in attendance, he passed the directing mantle for the evening to actor, producer and director Laurence Fishburne, a returning favorite having done the all-black cast Live Read of  Reservoir Dogs  and  Goodfellas. The daughters of Rev Run, Angela and Vanessa Simmons are both accomplished Angela making her mark in the fashion world and Vanessa appearing IN  television.
