Madea meets Sofia on OWN ...

TV mogul and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey and entertainer Tyler Perry teamed up to create a promotional advert for OWN.

The announcement was more low-key than a typical Tyler Perry production, but during a recent interview, Perry let word leak about a planned studio expansion.
But it may not be taking place at his 30-acre southwest Atlanta complex Tyler Perry Studios.
Could Oprah Winfrey don her costume, wig, and revive her hurried Sophia strut—the one that we all remember from her star turn in Steven Spielberg's adaptation of The Color Purple—for a base act of advertising for her network OWN.
Yes! Yes she could and it is real. It is not a spoof.
With Tyler Perry now programming on OWN, with original scripted series, he got in on one of the most "I can't believe it"marketing ploys ever.
The advert was released in April to promote Perry's two new shows on the revamped network.
In the 60 second promo entitled Madea Meets Sofia: The Search for Own, both Winfrey and Perry reprise their most famous roles.

Perry and Oprah are in full promo mode per the recent OWN commercial...

Madea vs. Sophia

Oprah and Tyler Perry are coming together on OWN—but Madea and Sofia can't seem to find the channel. Watch to see what happens when this no-nonsense granny comes meets The Color Purple favorite on a dirt road.

On a dusty road, Madea - Perry's most popular creation - drives up to Oprah Winfrey's Sophia from The Color PurpleMadea is desperately searching for what channel OWN is on, as every cable provider apparently has it assigned to a different station number. Sophia responds with an amusing version of her 'fight my whole life' speech from The Color Purple.

In the Academy Award-winning film, Winfrey's character angrily rants to Whoopi Goldberg's character about how she has suffered abuse at the hands of everyone her entire life.
In the promo, the revised speech is squarely directed at the frustrating mechanisms of the television industry and the abuse she has suffered because of it and Madea is the character in "Search of OWN."

To paraphrase:"All my life I had to fight...I had to fight the press folks. I had to fight the ratings. I had to fight dem haters. Girl, child ain't safe in the world in a world full of cable channels... I loves OWN. God knows I do. But I ain't gonna let nobody beat me. You want a great cable channel? You find OWN like everybody else been doin'." Madea responds by telling her to relax, that the network is 'doing fine.'

Last month, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported a company with apparent ties to Perry recently acquired 856 acres in Douglas County, southwest of Six Flags Over Georgia. The purchase set off speculation among nearby residents and film industry insiders that Perry could move or expand production operations there.

Meanwhile, Perry's OWN network debut approaches the wildly successful Perry will premiere two new sitcoms - The Haves and the Have Nots, a drama produced by Perry and a half-hour sitcom and Love Thy Neighbor; set in a restaurant filled with quirky characters seeking advice  - on OWN On May 28 and 29, Oprah Winfrey's network will begin airing Perry's two new shows, which will be the first original scripted series from the network.

Despite the cliché titles, these shows work.

Tune in May 28 and 29 for Tyler Perry's two-night premiere.
