Beverly Hills Cop IV Resurrected ... Again

Eddie Murphy’s iconic Beverly Hills Cop may be skipping the small screen and heading straight to the theaters.

The Beverly Hills Cop revival that was supposed to happen on television is now heading to the big screen instead. After reviving the character of Axel Foley for a pilot that never made it to series, Eddie Murphy is apparently interested once again in a fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie.

Paramount has decided to back Murphy’s return as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop IV, which would be written by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec. The two were also the screenwriters behind big-name movies like Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remake.

This is not the first time we've heard talks about a new Beverly Hills Cop movie in the 21st century. Back in 2006-- a time before Dreamgirls or even Shrek 3-- we heard rumors that Murphy was committed to the project. That was pretty much the last we heard of it until the TV show idea cropped up, but when that series-- which would have starred Brandon T. Jackson as Axel Foley's son-- didn't get picked up, the message seemed clear.

The last Beverly Hills Cop movie came out in 1994,
and any studio that's spent the last 20 years trying to make another one won't give up that easily. And though you may have never heard of writers Appelbaum and Nemec, Paramount's choice of them is a strong sign of how committed they are to this next Axel Foley adventure.

The writing team are credited with the lickety-split script for Mission: Impossible-- Ghost Protocol-- one of Paramount's biggest hits of the last few years-- as well as the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. If they were just trying to keep Murphy happy by putting another Beverly Hills Cop movie into
development, they could have hired writers they liked much less. So yes,
this four-quel is really happening… again.

Despite the setback, the franchise sparked enough interest for Paramount to get involved in another motion picture.

No release date or further production dates for the latest installment have been released.
