The Juicy Facts of why we Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day 2016

How many burgers do you think Americans eat in a year? Some say we average three per week or more than 150 a year. Others say that, all together, we’re eating 50 billion burgers each year.
What about cheeseburgers? When it comes to them, our favorite cheese to put on our burger is cheddar. The next favorites? American cheese, bleu cheese and Swiss cheese.
I’ll bet millions of Americans will be consuming plenty of cheeseburgers on Sunday, September 18. Why? Because it’s a national food day–specifically National Cheeseburger Day.

Americans eat 50 billion burgers (cheese and otherwise) a year! Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day (September 18) with these other juicy facts.

—Food Network dubs the cheeseburger at Au Cheval in Chicago (pictured above) the No. 1 burger in the country. It features three beef patties with a “perfect burger-to-cheese ratio.”

—Who invented the cheeseburger? Nobody knows for sure, but Louis Ballast of Denver’s Humpty Dumpty drive-in got the trademark in 1935.
—While American and cheddar cheeses are traditional toppers, mozzarella, blue and pepper jack are rising in popularity.

—The World’s Largest Commercially Available Burger (according to the folks at The Guinness Book) can be found at Mallie’s Sports Bar & Grill in Michigan. The “Ridiculous Burger” includes 10 pounds of cheese atop 190 pounds of meat.

—The Jimmy Buffett song “Cheeseburger in Paradise” was inspired by Buffett’s own burger craving while boating through the Caribbean.
