We wanted to do something really big for one of my lesser known client’s in the world OUTSIDE of Hollywood this year in my immediate community and submitted an application for a Community award. This award highlights the contributions of residents who work tirelessly to enhance the well-being of neighborhoods throughout DeKalb County. We have accepted this honor on your behalf and Be Someone and will celebrate with you by attending the 2016 Community Hero Awards Ceremony being held in your honor on Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 6:30 p.m. The event will be held at the DeKalb History Center located at 101 E Court Square, Decatur, GA 30030. Orrin "Checkmate" Hudson is a two-time World-Open speed chess champion and #1 Amazon Best Selling Author of One Move at a Time, How to Win at Chess and Life. 

Recently, Hudson was asked by Disney Studios to help promote the chess-oriented film, "Queen of Katwe,” by touring with the cast and putting on chess workshops in four cities—Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Los Angeles. 

Starring Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o ("12 Years A Slave") and actor David Oyelowo ("Selma" and "The Butler”), the film tells the story of Phiona Mutesi, a 10-year-old girl from the slums of Katwe, Uganda, who learns how to play chess and goes on to become a global chess champion. Hudson felt an instant connection to the life of Phiona Mutesi. Hudson went on to find a way to play the game forward. He founded Be Someone, Inc., a mentoring organization that has helped thousands of youths across the country. As a strategist, inspirational speaker and mentor, through Be Somone, Inc., Hudson has created a successful youth development program that helps young people learn to win through the game of chess. He has coached DeKalb County students to win a statewide chess championship and Atlanta Public School students to win three city-wide chess championships. He is the recipient of numerous leadership awards including the Martin Luther King Jr. Award and The FBI Directors Community Leadership Award. 

His work has been featured nationally on the front cover of Chess Life (December 2015); Good Morning America; CBS Early Morning Show; CNN; CNN Headline News; CNN American Stories; FOX & Friends; People; USA Today; Essence; Sports Illustrated for Teens; Jet; Black Enterprise and Time for Kids.

Hudson is a member of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Charles Stanley is pastor. Hudson has six children (three girls and three boys) and he lives in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
