BET has released a teaser trailer from its forthcoming miniseries on Nelson Mandela.
Titled Madiba, the almost two-minute clip finds Mandela (portrayed by Laurence Fishburne) preparing for a moment that became an integral part of his historical fight against apartheid — the burning of his pass book in front of law enforcement.

The six-hour miniseries was filmed exclusively in South Africa and on Robben Island and will be separated into three parts.
“The six hours really gave us an opportunity to explore what the movement was about. Obviously, Nelson was at the center. I really saw it and approached it as a three-part love story, that Nelson was the love of his nation,” Kevin Hooks, director, and producer, said in an interview with Deadline. “People will really get to know the sort of love affair in the relationship that Nelson had with the people around him…that was something we looked at as an opportunity to expand upon and tell the story of some of the lesser-known people.”  Fishburne stars in the series with Orlando Jones (Oliver Tambo); David Harewood (Walter Sisulu); and Terry Pheto (Winnie Mandela) .

Winnie is also getting some screen time (big screen specifically) this year. A documentary on her, titled Winnie, will be premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film focuses on her life while Nelson was in prison.

“While her husband served a life sentence, paradoxically kept safe and morally uncontaminated, Winnie Mandela rode the raw violence of apartheid, fighting on the front line and underground,” a brief description reads for Winnie. “This is the untold story of the mysterious forces that combined to take her down, labeling him a saint, her, a sinner.”

Madiba airs February 1, 8 and 15, 2017 on BETnetwork, as a part of its Black History Month programming.
