Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: Oscars, elects Whoopi Goldberg to leadership role

The leadership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences got an overhaul on Thursday. Hollywood's premier awards-dispensing organization revealed the results of its annual board of governors election, and no fewer than 10 of the board's 17 seats that were up for grabs this year were won by individuals who had not previously served on the board.





While the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the results of this year’s Board of Governors election, Ten of the 17 seats that were up for grabs were won by individuals who have never previously served on the board; 21 of the board's 54 seats now will be held by women including Oscar winner Whoopi Goldberg (of the actors branch), who currently hosts ABC's The View; indie filmmaker Kimberly Peirce(directors), who is best known for 1999's Boys Don't Cry; and former Academy chief marketing officer Christina Kounelias (public relations), who now serves as Participant Media's executive VP worldwide marketing and communications.

Goldberg beat out fellow actors Geena Davis, Edward James Olmos and Rita Wilson for her spot. Peirce toppled Donald M. Petrie, while Karaszewski beat Aline Brosh McKenna, John Ridley and Dana Stevens.


In all, nine women were elected or re-elected to the Board.

One notable name absent from the list is Rob Friedman, who was angling for Cheryl Boone Isaacs’ soon-to-be-vacated public relations seat and was said to still be interested in running for president of the Academy. Former Academy marketing chief Christina Kounelias won that seat instead.

Wednesday the organization announced a record number of new invites to its membership ranks, once again bolstering the group’s diversity goals.

'Passengers' Cast Chris Pratt & Jennifer Lawrence Team Up for New Movie

Georgia’s film industry is growing one movie at a time. The next major motion picture to film in the Atlanta area is Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt’s new movie ‘Passengers’.
