The 71st annual Prime-time Emmy Awards nominations announced

Emmy Awards

The 71st annual Prime-time Emmy Awards nominations announcement were revealed Tuesday, with returning drama series champ Game of Thrones back in the mix in a record way.

The HBO epic which wrapped its final season this year set a new benchmark with 32 total nominations, the most for any program in a single season (beating NYPD Blue‘s previous mark). The series returns to the Best Drama series fight and also scored lead acting noms for Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke, along with a slew of supporting noms — seven of the 12 slots in those categories went to GoT actors including Peter Dinklage returning to defend his title.
Other big nom totals today: defending Comedy Series champ Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel(20), HBO’s Chernobyl (19), NBC’s Saturday Night Live (18), HBO’s Barry (17), FX’s Fosse/Verdon(17) and Netflix’s When They See Us (16).
A welcome surprises include Schitt’s Creek‘s multiple nominations (as the show will come to an end with season 6), Jodie Comer’s nod for Killing Eve, and all the love given to Fleabag (from Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s performance to supporting roles from Olivia Coleman and Sian Clifford).
Winners will be announced during the Emmys ceremony, to be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 22. The festivities will air live on Fox starting at 5 p.m. PT/ 8 p.m. ET.
